The data collected

The only personal data collected on the site is that which is recorded by the web server where the site resides. Web servers typically collect basic information about page requests, like the time, the IP address, the browser used and the page requested.

Why it is needed

Servers collect this information for security reasons: they have software to detect suspicious activity. They monitor requests and ban IP addresses that show suspicious activity (like repeated attempts to find a log-in page).

Servers also keep log files with this information in, so that if a site is hacked then there is a record of past activity. This helps track down the cause of the hack.

Although your IP address is judged personal data under GDPR, in reality it doesn't say much about you. You can't identify a person's location from it. The best an IP address will tell you is the region someone lives (often not even the city).

Your IP address can also change, so you can't even say that person who has a certain IP address on one day will be the same person who has it another day.

I make no attempt to identify or track people using this data.

The legal basis

The legal basis for processing the IP addresses is legitimate interest. It is to ensure the security of the website and the safety of its users. If the website got hacked, then it might be injected with malware targeting the site users.

How the data is processed and stored

The page request information mentioned above is aggregated into simple, high-level statistics. This allows me to see the level of activity on different parts of the site.

The data is stored on servers in the UK, hosted by Krystal.

Exercising your rights

If you have questions or concerns about any of the above feel free to contact me (martin@martincookdesign.co.uk).

Google Fonts

The fonts on this site are stored with the site files. They are not downloaded from Google Fonts when you view the site. Google Fonts is used by many websites, but it has been judged to violate GDPR (see the article at Termageddon). Also, people in the past have expressed concerns to me about visiting sites that use this service.
